Overscale Photos~
So when I ended up with a big empty wall in my little boys' sock monkey bedroom, I decided that I wanted to fill it with an overscale photo. I have the perfect black and white photo of the hubby as a child on horseback. (I'll share later I promise.)

Since we live in a rental, I obviously can't choose the wallpaper option, so I'm leaning toward a large stretched canvas like the one above. But here's the thing. Stretched canvases in that size are quite pricey (even with the pro-photographer's discount we can get at our processor).
So I just wanted to throw a couple of questions out there to you all in blogland...
First, what do you all think of overscale photos in decor?
And second, does anyone know any alternatives to stretched canvas...I don't know, perhaps advertising banner type prints? Just checking out the alternatives before I make my final decision.
Happy Monday~

How stunning is that! I love it. Maybe you can just get a really large print or banner made and then make your own backer board out of thin wood.
I think it can be a great look and you know how to put things together!! Surely someone in blogland's vast pool of talent will have a cheap alternative.
I am anxious to hear. I have a similar idea for our master bedroom, but I'm not quite sure how to pull it off.
I think they are super fun!
Could you get the wall paper and put it on a "false wall" like a big piece of plywood or something like that?
I'm a huge fan of the look!!! Wish I had any helpful tips of what to use. I hope you get advice because I have a huge wall in my home that could pull this look off.

I think that a canvas might be the same price as a proff. blown up photo. Price compare. But, did you know it is very easy to make your own canvas?? Buying canvas fabric and stretching over your hand made frame, then covering with Gesso to prepare it for your photo. More time consuming, but another idea.
Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Just a thought....this may interrupt the look you are going for, but could you crop the picture into 8x10 or 11x13 (or whichever size would help you make your budget) sections and then place all the sections on the wall in the proper order (with or without space in between) to make one big picture...sort of like a puzzle? Seems like I saw that done somewhere, and it was a neat look. Might have to play around with it in smaller, cheaper (like 4x6) sections first to get the right look. I'm a fairly new reader, and I LOVE your blog! Thanks for sharing such great ideas!
Maybe painter's canvas drop cloths? I've seen them used as super thrifty painted floor cloths. Or frame sections of the photo blown up and just printed, framed, and hung in order with 3M hangers?
I like the look, but we don't have any uninterrupted wall space!
I think I heard somewhere that you could print it to "poster" size at somewhere like staples for cheap. I have never done it, but maybe something to check into. :)
i am with you on this great idea..it is something i would like to do as well..would you post anything that comes your way on this topic? i would really be interested in knowing more! thanks
I too adore that room and have had the picture saved for a year or two! I too would love to see how that can be done for cheaper.
For something that big, what if you went with a tiled look? Divide it into proper proportions, print out 4x6s or 8x10s (etc) and find some cheap frames (like these from IKEA http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/96471400 or whatever size you choose) and let the tiled look add to the artistic feel. Furthermore, if you decide you want to change the pic, you just need to get more pictures printed since you already have the frames. Just a thought; perhaps not your style?
Good like! I'm excited to see what you come up with!
Oops, just realized Wendy beat me to it. Great minds... ;)

in her dining room she had a huge print made from a sketch. it's printed on paper with adhesive on the back. sort of like contact paper/wallpaper. i'm pretty sure she said that it was removeable. she wrote a post about it a while back and links to the place she had it done.
I love that look! What about printing it as a vinyl sign at a copy shop and then stretching it over an unpainted canvas from the art shop? All you'd need is a staple gun.
HTH!
LOVE the overscale photos!!!
What a great idea Wendy! I think this would awesome in any room. Hope you had a great Mother's Day~ xoxox Susie
I like them, but am a little skittish of the permanence of wallpaper that I might not love next month (or year or whatever). Yes, you can take it down, but if it were on a large board type thing that you could take down and move around with ease, I would love the idea much more. So I really think you should go with it. As someone else suggested, I bet you could just make a regular print and them stick it onto a thin piece of plywood or even backing board like they have at frame shops. Good luck!
I think they're fun in theory, but I'd probably get sick of it pretty fast. Reminds me of the "scenic" wallpaper my aunt & uncle had in the early 80s!
so if the cost of the wallpaper is cheap, why not buying the wallpaper and then adhering it to a painters drop cloth that you stretch over a homemade frame.
WOW. What a stunning idea!!!

I love the idea! I actually like the canvas idea better than the wallpaper.
I love the over-sized photos- I also drooled over the same image. How about having the wallpaper done and attach it to panel from the hardware store?
What about using Rastabater (sp?) we did a wall of one photos for my nieces birthday party - here http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/
You could then adhere the sheets to a thin piece on wood.

I love it! Candid photos of the family make any space warm and welcoming. I say go for it!
Love the look and think
I might try it....
Love the overscaled photos. LOVE them! In fact you have just inspired some 'earthquake safe' decorating ideas in me.:):)
personally, i LOVE the look of the overscale photos
i LOVE phots on canvas
LOVE that look
i know its not for everyone but i think it really makes a home look fun especially those shots that capture a candid moment!
i've tried to come up with a solution myself, so i'm interested to hear what you find out.
a friend of mine in graphics has had several made on thick marketing type banner like you spoke of & that is much cheaper & has a cool look. PBT has done them with silver grommet things in the corner--very urban loft look, very cool
good luck xo
What a fabulous Idea! I love the photo's you pulled as examples. It really got me thinking!
Thanks for your sweet words on my blog.
I ADORE your sense of style and am inspired by you... daily!

Very cool! I saw something like this done with rolled canvas. They got it printed as a 3x5 foot and hung it from a rod I believe if I remember correctly. I have bookmarked updone.com as the company. It runs about $100.

I've been mulling over the same idea.....trying to figure out if I want to apply the picture on the wall like wallpaper or use a very large sheet of thin wood. Someone else had mentioned a site called (rasterbator)sp? but then I've also found a site called blockposters.com that you just download your picture and decide the size you want to cover and it sets up a file for you to print on your home printer on 8-1/2 x 11 sheets of paper.....put it together and you have a huge print! Hope this helps!
artscow.com does canvas prints that are not stretched for cheap (sales often) and you could attach to a rod and hang it and get the affect you are going for. I LOVE ARTSCOW.com and have ordered from them alot (no canvases yet though)
