My happy kiddos

This morning I was awakened by a flying three-year-old who landed squarely on my stomach. He and his five-year-old brother were playing tag and had decided that my bed was the free zone. This, my dear readers, is my life as a mother of four. I have always wanted to be a mother. I love my children with a fierce devotion. And it took me a long time to figure out that I can love my children, do everything that I can for them, and still take time for me. In fact, taking a little time for me has become an important part of my mothering. Remember the old saying, "if Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy"? That saying is full of wisdom.

I am a better mother if I don't neglect myself. But, here's where the hard part comes in. How, as a busy work-at-home mom do I find the time to take care of myself while still accomplishing everything else on my agenda? Well, I think I figured that part out. And it's pretty simple. I can't FIND the time. I have to MAKE the time.

There are two things that I need to do for myself on a daily basis that make me a happy Mommy. First, I need to take time to blog. It's a bit of an obsession for me, you see. (You all wouldn't know anything about that, would you?) And second, I need to exercise. My latest fitness infatuation is with a certain dance-inspired exercise class. I have a terrific hubby that doesn't mind if I go 4, count 'em 4, nights a week to the gym for that class. Never mind the fact that it doesn't start until 9 pm and all my kiddos are in bed. He still gives up seeing my charming face for an hour while I go work out. But he benefits, the kids benefit and I benefit from the fact that I get my endorphins going, I get in better shape, and I get happy!

So if there's nothing else you take away from this post, I hope you take away the fact that no matter how busy you are (and we're all busy) making time to take care of yourself will not only benefit you, but those you love as well.

I grew up the only child of a fabulous single mother, so I TOTALLY understand the importance of "me time". I get up at 4am (yawn) so I have the quiet of our house to myself before my two Bugs get up. Great post!

What gorgeous kids, yes we really do need to look after ourselves. Tomorrow is my big day out with a girlfriend while everyone is at school. I can't wait.

As parents we need to take time for ourselves or we are no good to anyone else.

You are so right! It is such a difficult balance to find... I only have one son, but I work full-time and just started blogging (quite obssessively!). I actually just recently dropped my gym membership because the hours did not work with my hectic schedule. But as Mom's, we need to remember ourselves. Thanks!

Even as an"EMPTY NESTER" I still have to remind myself of the importance of Me time. It's so easy to get caught up in the day day stuff that you forget about yourself. Thanks for the reminder!

Amen sister! I started working out pretty regularly about a year ago and it has made a big difference in my life. I am the mother of 7 and life is very hectic. It is a great stress reliever and I hear ya on going late at night. I do that quite often too! Cudos to our husbands for understanding the great benefit we get from it!

I'm leaving tonight for a 3 day girl-fest! I'm almost overwhelmed about going - trying to decide what to take me - listening to some of the pre-trip-squabbles - thinking maybe I'd just like to skip this one. BUT then I read a post like this and I remember that I need to away time. Thank you!

does your dancing exercise class happen to be Zumba by chance? I am a total addict to that class! So much in fact that I became a licensed instructor shortly before I became pregnant with #3 (who is due in 2 weeks). I agree with you that YES we do need to find time for ourselves.

I feel so inspired, happy, and relieved to read this post. I often struggle with feeling guilty when I take time to do things for myself, even to blog! But those little things do "feed the soul" and energize me, and just as you said, make me {better} for my family. It just feels so good to hear someone say it--Thanks=)

I completely agree with you about "me" time.

I started blogging for that reason two years ago and a year ago I started belly dancing, then running.

I couldn't be happier and it absolutely makes me a better person and mother.
