National S'mores Day~

12:41 AM
Tuesday was National S'mores Day! And hey, I'm all about a holiday that celebrates food...especially chocolate, so I was on board with the idea. And it didn't take much to convince the kiddos that they wanted to have a S'mores party either.

But before I tell you about our little fete de s'more, I must enlighten you with a little history on this most famous of all camping treats. The recipe for s'mores first appeared in a Girl Scout publication in 1927. So yes, those same wonderful girls who bring us our favorite cookies every year are the very ones who created our favorite fireside guilty pleasure. Okay, enough history.

Now on to my regularly scheduled programming.

We made our preparations...

Graham Crackers.....check.

Chocolate.....check. (We even included some Reeses Peanut Butter Cups for good measure...if you haven't tried them on a s'more, you're in for a treat.)

Stawberries....check. Screeeeeeeech. Halt. Strawberries?

Oh, yes. Do I have a treat for you...

Strawberry Banana S'mores
12 graham cracker boards
6 ounces milk chocolate
12 large marshmallows, cut in half crosswise
6 large strawberries, hulled and thinly sliced
1 large banana, thinly sliced on the diagonal
12 teaspoons strawberry preserves
1. Break each graham cracker in half along perforation to form 2 squares.
2. Place 12 of the squares on a flat work surface. Layer a 1/2-ounce piece of chocolate and 2 marshmallow halves on each cracker. In batches of 4, place them on a microwave-safe plate and microwave for 15 seconds, until marshmallows puff up.
3. Place a few strawberry slices and a banana slice on top of each square. Spread 1 teaspoon of preserves on one side of each remaining graham cracker and place, preserve-side down, over fruit. Press down gently; serve immediately.

(recipe from Family Circle)

And they're just as pretty as they are yummy! We actually planned on roasting our marshmallows the old fashioned way, but due to a power outage earlier in the week, our sprinkler's timer is off, and it soaked the wood in our firepit earlier in the day, so we ended up microwaving our s'mores and they turned out great. (the kids may have been just a *little* disappointed, however.)

But their disappointment quickly faded as they stuffed all that gooey goodness in their little mouths. All in all, a nice way to celebrate this important day. ;-)

Tomorrow...part 2 of our Anthro-esque photo shoot.

Have a great day~

I had a chocolate graham Zone bar a moment ago...does that count? Thank you for the recipe...and the craving. I'm a wee bit allergic to I'll just have to add more chocolate. Do you let your kiddos see the marshmallows plump up in the microwave? That's always fun to watch!

I hope you're having a lovely week!

OH I cannot get enough of smores lately! I nuke them in the microwave for 12 seconds until the marshmallows puff up and the chocolate chips get a little soft. I love the idea of adding berries into the mix!! Fabulous!!
